A short introduction to magnesium

Magnesium is one of the so-called vital minerals, i.e. it is essential to life but the body cannot produce it. Magnesium takes part in more than 300 processes in the body, for example, magnesium regulates the interaction of muscles and nerves and therefore guarantees the smooth functioning of the whole muscular system. None of the energy-dependent processes in our body would function without magnesium.

Magnesium – building block of life

In nature, magnesium occurs in the form of compounds mostly in the rock stratum of the earth's crust, but also in seawater and in the colourant chlorophyll in all green plants. The human organism contains about 26 g magnesium; most of it (60 %) being stored in the bones and contributing to bone stability. Therefore, in addition to an adequate calcium intake, care should be taken that the magnesium intake is also adequate, in order to ensure that the bones remain healthy into old age. Furthermore, magnesium plays an important role in cell division and in the functioning of the nervous system.

Magnesium – daily on the table

Magnesium occurs widely in plant- and animal-based food products but varies greatly in its content. It is found mainly in legumes, leafy green vegetables and cereals, all of which have high magnesium contents. Curative and mineral waters are also a source of magnesium.
